Public speaking as a way to gain confidence and grow your network

If the thought of public speaking makes you feel sick to your stomach, you’re not alone. But when you’re starting a business, or even refreshing your brand, you’re usually not thinking of public speaking as a way to establish yourself right away.

Even when you have to be thinking about everything from websites to opt-ins, mailing lists to SEO, the last thing on your mind might be a live event.

Why is that?

Well – for one thing, when we are just starting out, we may not know what we want to speak about. Fair enough. But why not make it part of your plan as you are in startup mode?

Speaking is probably one of the FASTEST ways to see if what you’re communicating is of value to others. Here’s why:

1. You get to practice talking about your work, your passions, and your interests with others and you get their feedback.
2. You can film your events or speeches and share them to build your network and profile.
3. You meet loads of interesting people in real life who will begin to refer clients to you.

So, what is holding you back? Well, there are probably several reasons that fall into three broad categories:

1. Not enough time
2. Fear of _____ (insert said fear here)
3. Not knowing what to say

Today, I want to offer you a few ideas to get over the things that are holding you back. Let’s talk about the first one:

1. Not enough time

make a commitment

Look at your priorities. Make a commitment, and allocate the time to research, reach out, create, attend, something a LIVE event.

Ok – we know that time is a human construct. How you use your time is up to you. So, if you dream “one day” of standing on a stage and wowing the audience, but you don’t “have enough time” to include some small steps to get that going, then you will NEVER “have enough time”.

Look at your priorities. Make a commitment, and allocate the time to research, reach out, create, attend, something a LIVE event. Start telling people you’re a speaker and you are excited to share your message/product/magic with the world.

You don’t have to make a special plan for this to happen – do it at the grocery store, at a party, allow the fact that you’re a speaker to come ‘naturally’ to the conversation and pretty soon, you’ll have opportunities to speak.

2. You have fear

fear

Look at your fear in detail. Describe it. Be curious about where it came from and why you have it. Then move on.

We all have fears of public speaking, humiliation, being laughed at, being naked on stage, forgetting our lines/speech/people to thank, etc. Look at your fear in detail. Describe it. Be curious about where it came from and why you have it. Then move on. You know how the saying goes; “Do something that scares you every day.” So, what are you waiting for?

3. Not knowing what to say

Pick something you’re AMAZING at. Break it down so the average person can understand it easily. You now have the framework of a speech.

Ok this falls vaguely in the ‘fear’ category – but it’s slightly different. It’s what stops us from actually telling people we are speakers.

Pick something you’re AMAZING at, (and yes, we are all amazing at something), and break it into three different areas of expertise. Break it down so the average person can understand it easily. You now have the framework of a speech.

Yup. That’s it. That’s what you start with.

So – problem(s) solved. If you want to know more, I invite you to visit www.jenlang.com/ready-speak-six-weeks to see how you can be ready to speak in as little as six weeks. That’s it.

While your website is being built you can be growing your audience, preparing a speech, and finding a venue.

It really can be that easy – so stop complicating your speaking dreams and get down to doing the steps you need to take to make them happen.

See you backstage!
